Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the review for minimum age was necessary in view of rising road crashes and fatalities among youth and teenagers in the country that already reached critical level.

"So we would like to invite the public to tell us and provide us suggestion what is the new (minimum) age to start having a driving or riding license" said Loke after having a two-hour meeting with Road Safety Department (JKJR) here this morning.

He said public could provide their input at the JKJR Facebook page beginning today.

However, the Transport Minister didn't provide the timeline of when the proposed new minimum age to qualify for driving license will be implemented.

Currrently, the earliest age to undergo driving test is 17-year-old while for the minimum age to become a probationary rider is 16-year-old.

Asked if 18-year-old would be the ideal age for minimum age, Loke said: "I can't say anything at this moment until we finalise it and after we receive public feedback."

According to the police statistics for 2016 which was released in October last year, a total of 1,161 deaths were recorded for age range from 16 to 20-year-old while one thousand souls of youth from 21 till 25-year-old lost their lives.

While the number of injuries sustained two years ago were 2,025 (age 16-20) and 1,645 (age 21-25).
